President’s Message

Dear Graduates and Alumni,

We've had great progress over the past several years as an Alumni Chapter, thanks mostly to our immediate past committee and past-President, Andy Tan, who tirelessly engaged all of us who are based in Singapore on behalf of the Singapore Chapter and QUT Alumni office. Andy's six years of hard work as President will continue to inspire us as the new committee takes office.

Having taken over the reins, the new committee has since then organized many different successful events. I am very fortunate to have a group of extraordinary individuals that is the current the committee, whom despite their very busy workload and schedule, has always been supportive and enthusiastic about making things happen.

Since 2009, we've had several BBQs, dinner outings, networking events and student support functions. Our aim is to hold a gathering at least once every quarter.

As always, we've actively participated in QUT graduation ceremonies in Singapore, pre-departure briefings for new students, and 'Study in Australia' fairs. Our committee has even been singled out by the Australian High Commissioner to Singapore, H.E. Doug Chester for our spirit of volunteerism at Austrade's 'Future Unlimited' education fair.

Our alumni are a varied bunch, ranging from fresh graduates in their early 20s to seniors in their 70s, Singaporeans and Internationals, in a range of industries and career pathways. I'm also happy to report that a number of senior alumni have taken the lead in an unofficial career mentoring capacity to some of our fresh graduates.

And of course, the Singapore Chapter could not have gone far without the support of QUT Alumni & Development office, as well as our sponsors, especially Hui and Kuah, for their constant & generous support, Alchemy Bistro for their venue & special drink offers, Paul Hayler & family for the yummy steaks & the use of their BBQ pit, and also Australian Alumni Singapore (AAS) in extending all their events & member benefits to all of our QUT Singapore Alumni.

Also, on behalf of the past-committees, past-Presidents and the current committee, I'd like to say a big thank you to Julie Mannion, QUT Alumni Relations Manager who retired in January 2012. Thank you for the 12 years of serving the needs of the global QUT alumni. Julie is more than an alumni manager to many of us, she's a mentor, our 'foster-mum', and most of all, our friend. Julie, now you can finally have a proper extended vacation in Singapore! Best wishes from all of us.

Finally, I would like to encourage more QUT graduates to volunteer in whatever way they can. We've set-up 2 methods of communication, via Facebook, QUT Alumni Singapore (https://www.facebook.com/groups/108898266005/) and LinkedIn, QUT Alumni - Singapore (http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=4342688). As we meet the new challenges of the upcoming years, we will continue to strive to create a community that solely belongs to you, and help to keep this community a platform for all QUT graduates to engage, communicate and network.

Yours sincerely,
Jason Chong
President (2009 - 2012)

QUT Alumni Singapore Chapter

Download a pdf version of information about the QUT Alumni Singapore Alumni Chapter

The QUT Alumni Singapore Chapter is a non-profit organization that are made up entirely of graduates from QUT and the intent of the chapter is to create a network of contacts within Singapore and probably foster other chapters within the Asian region as well. It also acts as a rendezvous for QUT graduates who are living in Singapore, to keep in touch with the happenings of their alma mattar.

The objects of the Alumni are:-

  • to establish and maintain means of communication, consultation and cooperation between graduates of the University living in Singapore and the University.

  • to engender support for the University and its various undertakings from Members of the Alumni, including assistance with pre-departure information to prospective QUT students.

  • to undertake professional development activities for Members in conjunction with the University

  • to organize and supervise social activities for Members

  • to inform Members about the activities of the University

We organize events to help QUT Alumni (Singapore) members keep updated with seminars which are conducted by industry leaders, recognized QUT Alumni members or the staff of QUT. The intent of these events are to help graduates
keep up with the leading edge of changes within the industry as well as selfdevelopment, thus keeping the post-academic degree valuable.

Fresh graduates from QUT can also enjoy our exclusive networking sessions. This is where members can get to meet these untapped talents, fresh out from their academic institution. This will facilitate with the opportunity for fresh graduates to land themselves with potential job offers, offered by their seniors. If this is not top of the agenda, it is still good fun to hang out with a crowd who can impart tacit knowledge of tactics to survive in the working world. This is where the birth of a mentor-mentee relationship could benefit the fresh graduates as seniors cultivate these gems into jewels.

QUT periodically sends their staff up to Singapore to advise members on how to write and "sell" themselves in a résumé. The staff will even go through the trouble of checking graduates' résumé, to ensure that they do not miss out critical
information that might be vital for the interviewer.

We have all experienced the community spirit which has bind and drove us through our studies in Australia... and now that we are back in Singapore, we don't see why that should stop... as we step into a new and more permanent phase of our lives.

The Singapore Chapter has a team of committed volunteers who will deliver this promise of our mission statement. We cordially invite all QUT graduates living in Singapore to join us and bring the Spirit of Australia back to our homeland.
Our Membership Fee for the Singapore Chapter :-

  • $5 for a two year membership

AS we are a non profit organization, this membership fee is used in our operations of the alumni activities, and in providing us in subsidizing the cost of the networking events and activities for our members.

Message from the Chapter President - Andy Tan
Singapore Merlion

Dear Members and Friends,

Welcome to the QUT Alumni Singapore web page.

"I miss Brisbane….. I really enjoyed myself there" and "I still prefer and miss the life as a student at QUT". These are just two of the most common remarks made by the QUT graduates during gatherings. Alongside our degrees, diplomas and expertise, we have also brought back many unforgettable plus vivid memories of QUT and Brisbane. Every now and then, we will get together and relive those beautiful moments again. What a joy it is!

The Alumni knows how important networking is in our society. It can help businesses to grow, projects to run smoothly, sales to increase as well as broadening one's horizon. Who you know is just as important as what you know. Hence, the Alumni will serve as a networking channel that provides opportunities to interact and maintain contact with our fellow graduates and our parent university.
