The QUT Melbourne Alumni Chapter invites you to an evening in the historic Old Treasury Building with inspirational guest speaker, Don Fry AO. Don will share the story of his early career, building his own shipbuilding company to his current roles in engineering and extensive charity work. Don has appropriately named his story - Boyhood Dreams Made Real. After completing his apprenticeship as a fitter and turner and then later his Diploma in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Don Fry AO took over and expanded his father's Cairns based business of NQEA to become a leading supplier of sugar mill machinery, mining equipment and a shipbuilding company. During Don's time the company built 230 Ships including 50 for the Royal Australian Navy from 1966 to 2005. Over 40 years, Don has committed his time to a long list community projects, including as Chair of the National Committee advising the Federal Government on Homelessness, Chair of the Queensland Marine Board and Chair of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. In 2012 he was recognised for his community service when he was awarded the Order of Distinguished Auxiliary Service. Don moved to Melbourne in 2006 to enjoy the arts and now spends time developing advanced medical devices to improve orthopaedic and spinal surgical procedures.
