Now for something completely different! How about joining us on a visit to the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard at Manly? Learn about the work of this fascinating volunteer group and take a look at their facilities and equipment. Then, if you wish, enjoy an early evening dinner at one of the nearby cafes on the Wynnum/Manly Esplanade overlooking Waterloo Bay.
On a daily basis the QF2 Brisbane Coast Guard monitors Moreton Bay, and looks after boaties who get into difficulty. Their duties also take them further afield, for instance they assisted in the Lockyer Valley during the 2011 floods.
Brisbane Coast Guard is a non-government funded organisation, which recently acquired a new vessel to add to its flotilla, the 10m former Brisbane Water Police vessel 'G J Olive', known as the fastest rescue vessel on Moreton Bay. The Coastguard volunteers are regularly called upon to assist with rapid response tasks, where a large and powerful vessel has to respond swiftly to emergency situations on Moreton Bay and far out to sea. We will be privileged to hear from them about this work.
We are lucky in having links with members of the Brisbane Coast Guard, who will host our visit. To acknowledge their assistance and to support their ongoing work, we propose a gold coin contribution from members on the day.

Our Visit on September 28th 2012, was to the Queensland Maritime Museum at Southbank. Twenty five members were able to attend, and we split into two groups to be shown around by QMM volunteers, Milton and John. They ably chaperoned us through the museum building, notable for its model ships, timber boats, and historical displays. We then moved to the expansive open precinct where we were able to take pleasure in children enjoying 'Pirate week' frivolities, as we admired such vessels as the Queensland-built navy frigate Diamantina and Jessica Watson's Ella's Pink Lady. At the conclusion of a stimulating visit, most of us were able to proceed up to the nearby College of the Arts cafe and enjoy an alfresco lunch spread.

COFS members recently attended an exclusive tour of the completed construction work at Gardens Point Campus and a view progress on the yet-to-be-completed work at the new Science and Engineering Centre (SEC). One of the pleasures of the tour was the visit to L Block for a last time before its demise. Whilst reviewing changes to the GP landscape, the visit also gives us an opportunity to visit new student laboratories and to witness demonstrations of some of the fancy new gizmos now in place.
