Outstanding Alumni Awards - Guidelines |
|
Guidelines for Nominators (Proudly supported by NAB)Purpose of AwardsThe purpose of the Outstanding Alumni Awards is to recognise graduates of QUT and its predecessor institutions for exceptional professional, academic or research achievement and contribution to the community at the local, state, national or international levels. The event is conducted annually and is an initiative of the QUT Alumni Board, which consists of graduates, past and present staff, past and present Council members and other qualified members. This year's awards presentation will be held on Wednesday 23 July 2008 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, South Bank. Structure of Awards
Nominations for the awards may be submitted by members of the University community and the wider community. For example:
Special Excellence awards may be made each year at the discretion of the Chancellor's Judging Panel. ALL nominations received by the Alumni Office will be considered. Any Special Excellence awards will be at the discretion of the Chancellor's Judging Panel. For example: Professional Excellence (e.g. leadership in professional associations), Excellence in Contribution to the Community (e.g. enhancing the arts, literacy, healthcare, poverty, mental health, equity, etc), Excellence in the Face of Adversity, Excellence in Globalising Indigenous Arts and Culture, etc. Other categories may be introduced by the Chancellor's Judging Panel. Eligibility for NominationAustralian and overseas graduates (alumni) of QUT, QIT, BCAE, NBCAE, BKTC, QTTC, CTC and other predecessor institutions are eligible candidates for the awards. (This gives equal opportunity for Australian and overseas born graduates to be Faculty winners, the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award Winner and the Chancellor's Outstanding Alumnus of the year.) Alumni who are former staff of QUT or predecessor institutions are also eligible. Alumni who have displayed an on-going high level of achievement in their field and in service to the community are most likely to have a minimum of ten years of career experience. The Faculty awards are not designed to reward those who are nearing graduation or who have recently graduated. However, the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award is designed to reward those who are normally 30 years and under. To be eligible for nomination alumni do not have to be working in the particular discipline from which they graduated. Previously nominated alumni who were unsuccessful in winning an award may be re-nominated by attaching up-to-date information to the nomination form. Faculty panels may also elect to reconsider previous nominations and may request updated information to be supplied. Permission must be obtained from an alumnus before proceeding with a nomination. Statements of SupportThe nominator is encouraged to approach the nominee for additional information, particularly related to service to the community outside their professional area. (QUT Schools are encouraged to discuss nominees with their Faculty Office before approaching an alumnus for more information.) Nominations should be prepared with attention to detail, ensuring that all possible information on the nominee is included. Nominators should include information regarding why the nominee is exceptional. Selection ProcessThe Faculty selection process is at the discretion of the Executive Dean. A Faculty Executive/Dean's Management Committee has often assisted the Executive Dean to nominate the Faculty's winner from the nominations received. Ideally, nominators should be excluded from the Faculty Executive/Dean's Management Committee when selecting the Faculty's winner. If the nominator is on the selection panel, then the nominator's interest should be declared. The Faculty winners are then considered by the Chancellor's Judging Panel, which has responsibility for selecting the Chancellor's Outstanding Alumnus, the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award Winner and, at its discretion, granting special category awards.
